Anupriya Patel calls for the adoption of Industry4.0 to realise the vision of India@2047

FICCI announces the first-ever Industry4.0 Awards

New Delhi 05 May 2022: "Technology is the solution and a way to move forward", said Smt Anupriya Patel, Minister of State for Commerce and Industry, at the first Industry4.0 Awards & Conference organized by FICCI.  

The minister said that Industry4.0 aims to increase productivity and efficiency and address sustainability and climate change issues. She alluded to the Amrit Kaal and noted that industry has a significant role in realising the PM Modi's grand vision of India@2047 by adopting industry4.0.  

"Industrial sector, in a major way, can contribute to the economic development, which is both sustainable and inclusive", she said, and noted Government of India initiatives for creating an industry-friendly and a conducive environment. These included: the substantial improvements in Ease-Of-Doing-Business rankings, India becoming the third-largest startup ecosystem globally and the ongoing Unicorn wave in the country. 

"The government's role has changed from regulator to facilitator"she said, and added, "the adoption of industry4.0 is something that we have to do together ". 

Speaking on occasion, Mr Amitabh KantCEO, NITI Aayog, said that traditional manufacturing and service-oriented industries are being disrupted in a manner which we've never seen before. "The fourth industrial revolution is driven by ten or more technologies transforming industrial production today", he said. 

He alluded to autonomous robots, simulation, big data and analytics, augmented reality, the cloud, cybersecurity, additive manufacturing, horizontal and vertical integration, the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence, which are impacting the entire production value chain.  

"India as a country has embraced technology", he said and alluded to the new education policy, the focus on up-gradation of skills, and the country's "highly flexible, resilient and adaptive workforce, which is multi-skilled and can undertake digital tasks from anywhere rather than a fixed location". 

Talking about Industry4.0, Kant said that the country could not afford to bypass the Industry4.0 revolution, and the industry of India needs to leapfrog industry4.0 adoption. "The only way we can grow at rapid rates and create jobs, is to adopt cutting edge technology and new-age tools", he said. 

Dr Rene Van BerkelIndia Representative, UNIDO, talked about a UNIDO study that places India among the 22 early adopter countries using advanced digital production technologies. "India is the only middle-income country in this group", he said. 

In his welcome address, Mr Sanjiv MehtaPresident, FICCI and CEO & Managing Director, Hindustan Unilever Limited (HUL), said that the Fourth Industrial Revolution is distinct from its predecessor in velocity, scope, and system's impact and is characterised by a fusion of technologies that is blurring the lines between the physical, digital and biological spheres.  

"The speed of current breakthroughs has no historical precedent when compared with previous Industrial Revolution", he said. 

Alluding to the innovations anchored at HUL, Mr Mehta said that HUL aims to become the most intelligent consumer goods enterprise. He talked about the company's Shikar app, which over 8 lakh small stores use, thereby helping the company capture the trends on demand. On the other hand, the World Economic Forum recognized HUL's factory in Dapada as the first lighthouse factory in FMCG space in India.   

"We treat data as an enterprise asset to augment decision making across the chain", he said.  

In his introductory remarks about the FICCI Industry4.0 Awards, Mr Suprakash Chaudhuri, Chairman, FICCI I4.0 Committee and Executive Vice President & India Country Head - Digital Industries, Siemens, averred the awards aim to exemplify and showcase interesting adoption of technologies. He added that "the inspiring success stories of the 'FICCI Industry 4.0' Awardees will act as a catalyst to encourage the industry to adopt robust and sustainable digital systems." 

In his address, Mr Rajeev Singh, Co-Chairman, FICCI I4.0 Committee & Partner Consulting, Deloitte India, alluded to the need to create a brand identity for the country. He said that Japan is associated with quality manufacturing; on the other hand, China is known for scale, Germany with precision engineering, and similarly, the USA with innovation. In the same vein, he said, "we need to create a brand identity for India, and Industry4.0 is a step in that direction". 

On occasion, the minister also unveiled the FICCI Industry 4.0 Handbook and gave out FICCI Industry4.0 awards to the winning participants from sectors: paper, heavy engineering, electronics, construction equipment, FMCG etc. 

In the Overall Digital Transformation category, JK Paper Mills Limited won the Platinum Award, and Larsen & Toubro Limited, Heavy Engineering and Bosch Automotive Electronics India Pvt. Ltd received the award under the Gold and Silver category. 

Under the Smart Operations category, L&T-MHI Power Boilers, ITC Ltd. - Bangalore Cigarette Factory, and L&T Defence - Hazira Unit won under the platinum, gold and silver categories. 

In the Smart Product category, m2nxt got the Platinum award; the Gold award went to Gainwell Commosales Private Limited, and Somany Home Innovation Limited won the Silver award. 

Lastly, Gainwell Commosales Private Limited was the sole winner under the Smart Customer Experience category. 

Ten corporate organisations received Certificates of Appreciation. These included: Larsen & Toubro, Transmission Line Tower Works (Transmission Line BU, Power Transmission & Distribution IC), Madhya Pradesh, Adani Electricity Mumbai Limited - Distribution Business, Mumbai, Jay Bharat Maruti Limited, Gurugram, BASF India Ltd., Gujarat, Haldia Energy Limited, West Bengal, Larsen & Toubro Limited, Heavy engineering IC, Surat (Focused Category), Dalmia Cement (Bharat) Limited, Ariyalur, Tamil Nadu, Mondelez India Foods Pvt. Ltd, Himachal Pradesh (Smart Operations), Larsen & Toubro Ltd. - Water & Effluent Treatment IC, Tamil Nadu, and Godrej Electricals & Electronics, Mumbai.
